If you’ve been contemplating installing a swimming pool or re-modeling your old one, you’ve got decisions, decisions, decisions to make. Well, we’re here to help. The size of your pool can vary greatly depending on your family’s needs.  Here are a few tips we’ve outlined for you to consider when having a pool added to your backyard.

First, consider the amount of patio you’ll be needing.  Will you be laying in the sun a lot or a little? Will this area be used as an outdoor living space? Does anyone need to do laps?

These are all great questions to ask yourself when having your pool designed.  Your pool designer will help a great deal, but it’s up to you to give them as much information as possible.

The other thing that will help you determine the placement of the pool is how far it will be from the house. Are there property lines or will this be a nuisance to your neighbors? Will you have to remove any plants or trees?

This is a big investment and something that is long term so the more you know going in, the better off you’ll be and the more you’ll enjoy your pool.

Pools can vary in length and width as well as variations in features. How deep a pool is another factor to decide?  In order for you to swim a pool needs to be at least 4-5 feet deep and there should be a wading area for little ones if you have them.  This is generally around 3 feet and can go longer if you choose so.

Lap pools are approximately 25-foot long and don’t necessarily need a wading area. If sports like water volleyball will be played, then it’s helpful to have a 3-foot deep wading area at both ends.

POOL SHAPES AND SIZES

A lap pool is designed for swimming only. The oblong shape is not well suited to family fun.

The shape of your pool is going to be another determining factor. If you select a lagoon style pool with waterfalls and rock formations that will be a completely different style compared to a square or rectangle.  Depending on the size of your yard, will dictate what type of style and size will be accommodating.

The next thing to consider is the amenities.  Will you be installing a Jacuzzi at the same time? What about a fireplace or some other feature that will require space? By making a game plan for your pool design you’ll be ahead of the project and you’ll find the everything else will run a lot smoother ‘from soup to nuts’.
